Sociology Research

Marieke is a PhD candidate and conducts her research under the supervision of Prof Sarah Franklin and Nick Hopwood. Marieke obtained her B.A. Honours in the Liberal Arts and Sciences at Amsterdam University College (University of Amsterdam, Free University Amsterdam), before completing her MPhil at the University of Cambridge in 2017.

Marieke’s work focuses on the debates on human embryo research that emerged following the introduction of In Vitro Fertilisation in the 1980s. Her work examines how the relationship between science, policy and morality was negotiated in these debates by analysing how a particular model of early human development was mobilised in the policy debates at this time. She focuses on the life and work of reproductive biologist Dame Anne McLaren and her contributions to the debates. Marieke’s research is being funded by the Wellcome Trust.
