Haonan is a doctoral researcher in the department of sociology, University of Cambridge. Having trained in philosophy and political science, he is currently interested in the field of social theory, especially its global circulation and reception. His academic interests also extend to political philosophy and the history of ideas.
His PhD dissertation concentrates on the reception of Durkheimian and Weberian social theories in Chinese academia, notably sociology, after the 1980s. In this project, he attempts to emphasise the roles of local intellectuals in the reception process, aiming at theorising the interactions between knowledge production and intellectual interventions within the context of rapid social and cultural transformation.
Prior to joining Cambridge, he earned an M.A. in philosophy and a B.A. in international politics, both from Fudan University in Shanghai.
