Vishal Vasanthakumar is a PhD Candidate at the Department of Sociology and a Gates Cambridge Scholar. His doctoral work focuses on Private School Education and the effects it has on Caste and Class identities in India, with a special focus on Tamil Brahmins. He is broadly interested in how socially dominant groups seek to retain power and hegemony and works at the intersection of the Sociology of education and caste.

Vishal holds a Masters in International Education Policy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and is the author of the book "The Smart and The Dumb: The Politics of Education in India" published by Penguin Random House India
