The AirKit proof-of-concept (PoC) project builds on prior ERC-funded Citizen Sense research, which investigates the role of low-cost and digital monitoring technologies in facilitating and organising new types of environmental engagement. AirKit will test and develop a comprehensive citizen-sensing toolkit for participants to undertake air quality monitoring in order to realize the social and environmental potential of these technologies. With the benefit of intensive research undertaken through the Citizen Sense project, the AirKit project will bridge the gap between research and the early stages of innovation in order to realise the innovation potential of the project. This ERC-funded PoC will help to establish the viability of the AirKit, to refine and address technical issues, and to consolidate the overall direction of the AirKit. Our research pioneers new strategies of citizen-led monitoring and data analysis that join up hardware and software developments along with social inventiveness in order to produce social technologies that have the potential to revolutionize community monitoring infrastructures and practices.
