Sociology Research

Dr David Lehmann is the principal investigator of this project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, which runs from 2014 to 2016.

Project Description

The study focuses on Messianic movements among people from Jewish and evangelical backgrounds in Brazil, Israel, the UK and the USA. It approaches it as a global phenomenon, which exhibits distinctive features in different locations, notably in Brazil where they claim descent from Jews (‘New Christians’), victims of the Inquisition who came in the early colonial period. Messianism has yet to develop a ‘core’ as Pentecostalism and neo-Pentecostalism have done, and this research aims to discover whether it will remain on the margins of the great traditions or represents a wholly new stream in world religion.
