Sociology Research

 

Dr Shuting Xia is a Research Affiliate at the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge.

Shuting holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge. Using mixed research methods, her doctoral work "Labour market dynamics of self-employment in China: the interplay of institutions and gender" explored China's most recent self-employment patterns and outcomes, the disparity between self-employment entry in rural and urban regions, and the impact of institutional transformation on the opportunities available for men and women of different social groups.

She worked for the Development and Research Center of the State Council of China as a research assistant and journal editor before receiving her MSc in Public Policy from University College London. Research Interests: Labour markets; self-employment; digital employment; the future of work

Research Projects

'Digitalization and Employment', International Labour Organisation, 2021-2022

This scoping review of the publicly available literature examines the new labour market opportunities brought about by digital transformation. It identifies gaps and potential avenues for future research. It also explores how some policies may be designed to offset the negative impacts of labour market transformation on individuals and communities.
